Joe R.'s Story

Let's see where do I start. I left El Paso just after graduating in the summer of 1966. However, I kept coming back to El Paso then would return to California, work for a while and then return to EP. Somewhat confuse as to where I wanted to settle down and keep in mind the Viet Nam war was going strong. Most places of employment would not hire you if you were classified 1A. I actually attended El Paso Tech for that summer and had enough credits to graduate and I went ahead and did it, out of necesity, why lie. I needed to go to work and earn money for my family and siblings. Not much work in at El Paso back than, if you consider hard working, factory, assembly work. No, not this guy. So I relocated to Southern California, Santa Ana Ca. to be correct. Went to Cerritos College for technical courses and certificate. Got that, but the needed people with experience, I think it was a matter of where you came from, if you catch my drift. I did happen so again why lie. Did some (very little) factory work in Gardena, Ca. Join Jr. & The Preludes band out of El Paso, Tx located in Orange County at that time. Jr. been my older brother, we recorded som...Expand for more
e songs, and really enjoyed been on the recording studios. In between been a weekend musician for also 24 or so years I also worked for Southern California Edison. I worked for Edison 24 years, 4 months and 2 weeks. Was offered an early retirement and I took it. There has been many a times when I had regreted doing it but I needed a change in my life and working environment. New challange if you may. I do miss doing our gigs, the crowds, playing next with Little Joe y La Familia, Mexican artist etc, meeting new people, making our fans happy and quick on their feet. And of course the band members the camaraderie, If I may. Currently working for the Santa Ana Unified School District as a Facillities Planning Technician. Newly elected Treasurer for the CSEA Chapter 41 Union, which represents approx. 1700 members. Not happy times in our district, proposed personnel cuts, many millions of dollars to be cut for our employees and in turn will effect our scholars. Our district is the fifth largest in California and with the highest cuts in funds and jobs for classified personnel. So needless to say we have our jobs cut out for us. Another challange.
